Miss June For my inimitable mother, June Flathers
My Brit mum is one of a kind. I conceived her song in the spirit of Gilbert & Sullivan light opera.
Chorus:
Miss June, Miss June- she came from across the water
Miss June, Miss June - she's England's prodigal daughter!
She came from Sidcup, County Kent
Firstborn of John and Eileen
To grammar school she proudly went
With younger sister Irene
She came here for a short-term loan
But who'd have ever thunked it?
She made the States her perm'nent home
She stopped right here and "plunked it!" (Chorus)
She mastered multimedia
As nurse and educator
Vendeur of 'cyclopediae
And libr'y coordinator
She sat on all the music boards
And helped them with fundraising
She gave away her pers'nal goods
Their value high appraising (Chorus)
She studied Chinese T'ai Ch'i Chu'an
And watercolor painting
E'en tried her feet at tapping dance
That left admirers fainting
Lectures avec Le Cercle Francais
And numerous committees
The opera and musical plays
On weekends in the Cities (Chorus)
This prim and proper young Brit lass
Procured a Yankee funny
Although she'd call him "silly ass"
He'd answer "dear" and "honey"
It's almost half a cen-tu-ree
And they still go a-trav'ling
They've writ themselves a his-to-ree
Their lengthy tale unrav'ling (Chorus)
In sum, she's first-class mum and wife
We bow and tip hats to her
We wish her all the best in life
And all the blessings due her
This song could ramble on for days
Of anecdotal free rhyme
But we'll end now our song of praise
The clock says that it's tea-time! (Chorus)
