You Should Know     Audio Clip

For the AZ Songwriters' Association Song Challenge July 2009

You don’t always know where I am and what I’m doing

Except for an occasional lunch-time call

You trust that I’m laboring for the future of our family

When I’m on the job, you know I give my all

But as sure as the seasons, I’ll come home every evening

To be with you and take you where you need to go

Though I’m worn out from work and my mind seems far away

There’s one thing that you just have to know:

You Should Know that I love you -

You Should Know I’ll be true

I pray that you can see it,

In the little things I do.

I should say it more often,

Not just when I come and go

But darling, I love you,

And I thought You Should Know.

Sometimes I’ll do the dishes, maybe cook a meal

Lend you my arm or hold your door,

It’s in those daily details that I can show how I feel

I only wish that I could show you more

I get down on my knees every day and I pray

That God above will keep you safe and whole

I’m sorry if you think I could ever take you for granted

Forgive me for assuming that you know

But You Should Know that I love you…

Knowledge is a funny thing; our heads can doubt what our hearts will sing

We focus on the thoughts we fear instead of trusting the love we see & hear

Final Chorus:

…But darling, I love you, I’m always thinking of you

Darling, I love you, and I thought I’d tell you so…

Darling, I love you, and I thought You Should Know.
